The effects of mass urban culture on the Caribbean.

 The Caribbean basin have become known in recent times for its high murder rate and in particular the massive inflow and outflow of illicit narcotics, throughout the region. On the cusp of the narcotics trafficking is a new type of ‘gangsta’, urbane, tech savvy, fashion forward and in many cases educated. This type of gangsta of the new generation is vastly different than the old heads that came before them. In this post I will examine that demographic and show and prove the direction that the region is now headed into is a morass that there will be no return from. With the advent of the growth of Islamic fundamentalism in the region, particularly in prison, and its appeal to young Afro-Caribbean males regionally, this development amongst the disenfranchised of the Caribbean, with its thrust on jihad and coming out from under oppression, the jihadist narrative will continue to take hold within the region. This telling though is of a different narrative, this telling is of the devastating impact that urban culture has had on the region.

The photo left is of a so-called “Rasta” in Trinidad who was recently arrested and seized in his home, with drugs and an arsenal of weapons including fully automatic high caliber weapons.

This is an example of the younger generation of fully urbanized drug dealer not only in Trinidad but regionally, who is a product of the gangsta rap music influenced youth of his generation. The first photo of him showing him posing in front of the white car is indicative of the Urban American gangsta rap culture, from his clothing and jewelry to the rims on the car. This new element is highly volatile and dangerous since they are totally committed to the messages in the music they wean themselves on. The out of control murder rate regionally is indicative of the culture of gangsta rap resident within the region, as a matter of fact, he is indistinguishable from any so-called gangsta rapper anywhere and that is the idea.
